In India, thousands of children with intellectual and physical disabilities still struggle for access to quality education and acceptance in society. Amid these challenges, Akhil Bhartiya Apang Kalyankari Bahuuddeshiya Sanstha (ABAKBS), based in Nagpur, Maharashtra, has emerged as a pillar of hope. Founded in 1997, this non-profit organization has spent more than two decades dedicated to empowering differently-abled children through education, rehabilitation, and employment opportunities. ABAKBS envisions a world where every child, regardless of ability, lives with dignity, confidence, and self-reliance.
Our Journey and Purpose
The journey of ABAKBS began with compassion and determination. What started in two small rooms with a handful of students has grown into a fully functional center supporting more than 50 children. Most of these students come from low-income families, where parents work as daily wage laborers and lack awareness about disability care and education. Through continuous community outreach, the organization identifies children who need help, assists in obtaining their MR (Mental Retardation) certificates, and provides them with structured educational and skill-based programs.
Education Beyond Books
ABAKBS believes that education is not limited to textbooks. It focuses on special education, vocational training, and life-skill development. Students are trained in screen printing, file making, flower making, computer data entry, and stitching. With over 20 laptops, educators teach color concepts, typing, and digital literacy. These programs help students develop both fine motor skills and cognitive understanding. Over 12–18 months, children gain the skills and confidence needed to enter the workforce or start small-scale vocational work.
The organization ensures that every student learns at their own pace. Teachers use patient, personalized methods to encourage progress and creativity. Many children who once struggled with communication or basic skills now proudly contribute to small-scale production and craft initiatives.
Holistic Care and Rehabilitation
Education alone is not enough — care and nourishment form the foundation of growth. ABAKBS provides three nutritious meals daily, regular health check-ups, and therapy sessions like physiotherapy and speech training. The residential facilities ensure safety and comfort for children who come from far-off places. A dedicated team of 25 staff members, including educational and residential caretakers, ensures round-the-clock support.
Every morning begins with prayer and positive affirmation. Students are taught cleanliness, time management, and social behavior. Recreational activities such as sports, music, and art therapy are integrated into daily routines to nurture confidence and happiness.
Awareness and Community Involvement
Awareness is a key part of ABAKBS’s mission. Each year, the organization conducts surveys and outreach programs across slum areas in Nagpur during March and April. The goal is to identify children with special needs and counsel parents about early intervention, education, and government benefits. These awareness drives not only bring new students into the school but also help communities understand that disability does not mean inability.
Building an Inclusive Tomorrow
From collecting vegetables in the early years to now operating as a recognized institution, ABAKBS’s journey has been one of perseverance and purpose. Despite financial hardships, the organization continues to expand its programs, aiming to develop better infrastructure, larger classrooms, and sustainable training units for long-term empowerment.
The ultimate goal is to build a society where differently-abled children are seen as capable, talented individuals who deserve equal opportunities.
